Topic:Festivals (Christmas, Easter) Theme:It's coming up to Easter! Check out this lesson plan that explores the events of Good Friday and Easter Sunday and its significance to Christians. Plan:Outcomes:By the end of the lesson, students should be able to • Recount key events of Good Friday and Easter Sunday • Explain key concepts of sin and atonement • Explain the importance of Jesus’ resurrection Note: Throughout, have some Easter confectionary to reward as prizes. 1. Anagrams! ACTIVITY: • Break students into pairs. • Complete the Easter anagrams found on the PPT. • Reward first pair finished with a pack of mini-eggs • Run through the answers REFLECT: Which word is the most popular ‘Easter’ word? Did the students find any of the words surprising? – i.e. words they didn’t associate with Easter? EXPLAIN: This lesson will look at what happened at Easter – the story of Good Friday and Easter Sunday – and it’s not the chocolate filled, fluffy event the shops often suggest! 2. Good Friday Resources: PPT, Miracle Maker DVD, 'Why did Jesus die?' film. ACTIVITY: Using the PPT, show a picture of Jesus on the board. Give the students two minutes to write down as many words or ideas as they can that they associate with Jesus. At the end of this, invite them to narrow this down to their top 5. Take ideas and create a list. Reflect: • What does this say about Jesus? • Where does his significance lay: in his life, or in his death? EXPLAIN: Jesus spent three years preaching and teaching – and what he said and did has inspired millions the world over (e.g. MLK, Ghandi, Mother Teresa). But for Christians, as important as his life is, the most significant thing that happened was in his death. WATCH: The Miracle Maker – chapter 17 – Jesus’ crucifixion (roughly 1:10 – 1:13). Afterwards, reflect: - What did they see that was good? - What did they see that was bad? - Why did Jesus die? EXPLAIN: Many people who accept that Jesus died on a cross will view his death as a tragic end to a good man. But Christians believe something altogether different. These events happened on the day Christians call ‘Good Friday’. It’s quite a strange title for a day when somebody is put to death in such a horrible way. So why call it good? The key to deciding a ‘good’ event lies in looking at the big picture – the consequences of an event rather than simply the event. In the Bible, Jesus spends a lot of people telling people that he was going to suffer and die: but he says that this is necessary to achieve something bigger: something that had been planned from the beginning of time… MEDIA: Show the short film 'Why did Jesus die?'. Ask students to re-explain what they have seen and heard/take any questions. Look at the words from Isaiah 53 (on PPT). EXPLAIN: Christians believe that Jesus’ death wasn’t an accident: it was something he was born to do. The gospels make clear that Jesus knew what was going to happen to him: • The myrrh at the birth • Jesus’ own words – ‘He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.’ (Mark 8: 31) Christians believe that through Jesus' death, they can now have a relationship with God and can spend life with him - here and into eternity. 3. The Resurrection (MEDIA: As a link/ throwaway wake-up call, show the KA ad clip on the PPT (or on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTZO4S9MB3w&feature=related). Pause it before the punchline and ask students, What happens next? Award prize for right answers.) EXPLAIN: There is nothing as final as death. But is it final? The thing Christians celebrate on Easter Sunday is that, for Jesus, death wasn’t the end… WATCH: The Miracle Maker – the Resurrection (about 1:14 – 1:17) ASK: Why is this such a surprise ending? Why might this turn of events be so important to Christians? Discuss in pairs for a couple of minutes, then share answers. TESTIMONY: Give your own explanation of what the resurrection means to you as a Christian and why Easter Day is so significant. Allow time to take questions. 4. Review Look at the words ‘Easter Sunday’. Create an acrostic poem using the first letters, expressing what Easter means to a Christian. (On PPT) Take feedback and reward students who have the best ideas! Author:Submitted by: Rachel Noyce Attachments:
