Being Honest!

Topic:

Life & Living (Friendship, Trust, Choices)

Theme:

A session looking at the importance of being honest through life.

Plan:

Icebreaker (5 minutes)

You didn't know but you should have known!

This is a great exercise for small groups who may already think they know one another...

Have everyone in the group write something about themselves down on a piece of paper that they don't think anyone else in the group knows.

Then put all the pieces of paper in a hat and then randomly disperse the pieces of paper again.

Then get them to read out their piece of paper, one by one and then have the rest of the group, try and guess which person wrote that item.

This can be a really fun activity and you'll find some very surprising things out about one another.

Watch your time on this activity as some discussions are guaranteed to get a little out of hand.

Game

Have you ever? (5 minutes)

Ask the young people to sit in a circle.

Then explain that we are now going to play a game, based on honesty, which is called 'Have you Ever?'

Then read out the following statements to the group, one at a time. But if any of the young people have done what it says, then they must stand.

Explain to the group that they don't have to explain themselves and that it is not about glorifying the actions, but about recognising that often we all do things that we might not be honest about at first.

The statements are:

* Have you ever copied your friends work at school?

* Have you ever dropped rubbish on the ground?

* Have you ever talked about someone behind their back?

* Have you ever cooked a meal by yourself for more than 8 people?

* Have you ever stolen anything?

* Have you ever sung on Karaoke?

* Have you ever done a Bungee jump?

Allow for discussion from the group following this game.

Thought (5 minutes)

Read from the Bible - Matthew 26 v 69-75.

Say

In that passage we read of Peter disowning Jesus not once, not twice but three times in quick succession.

Peter denies that he never knew Jesus let alone associated with him. But yet, this was far from the truth.

Peter was the first disciple to be called by Jesus. Together they went through many ordeals and great moments together during Jesus' life.

In spite of all of this, due to the situation that Peter found himself in, Peter was totally dishonest to everyone.

Ask & Discuss with group? (5 minutes)

How would Jesus have felt about Peter's actions?

Would Jesus of been disappointed?

Would he have felt betrayed?

By being dishonest, it can affect other people, but it can also deeply affect us.

The relationship between Peter and Jesus would have been damaged by Peter's act of dishonesty. Peter would of walked away feeling low, angry and ashamed of his dishonesty to Jesus.

Then ask the group- How would they feel on occasions that they may have been dishonest?

The key ingredient to any good relationship is to be honest.

It is impossible to build a good relationship without being honest.

Close the session by praying for one another that we would be honest even when it is hard and maybe not the easiest option in life.
