Lesson for GCSE/Standard

Lift the Label

Topic:

Ethics (Fair trade, Poverty, Human Rights)

Theme:

A classic lesson introducing trade (in)justice.

Plan:

Introduction - 7 minutes
Introduce yourself and any team members helping and give an outline of the lesson to the students. Show an introductory video which depicts some of the poverty and difficult conditions that workers have to face ( material produced by tear fund/world vision and others over the last few years has been very good.)

Play the t shirt game - 20 minutes
Divide the class into 6 companies and tell them that during the course of the game each company has to produce lots of high quality t shirts. These are paper cut outs from a template and coloured with a logo. They will be paid, by you or a team member as banker, according to company policy and quality. What the class will not know is that each company will have different standards and that pay and conditions will vary &endash; these are outlined below.

During the course of the game players will experience illness and death. You will get to choose which players contract the sickness. One player on each team can become ill every 8 minutes. Whether they die will depend upon whether or not the company allows them time off or has a health policy. Alternatively they can pay 10 euros for a dose of medicine. After playing for 20 minutes each family group will count their money and then calculate what they can buy from the shopping list given to them at the end of the game.

After 20 minutes or so of play present the groups with the following:

Clean water - 15 euros per group
1 meal a day per person - 5 euros
Accommodation in a slum - 15 euros
Good standard of accommodation - 22 euros
Health care - 10 euros per dose
Education - 16 euros per person
Clothing - 12 euros per item

Feedback - 10 minutes
Have each group calculate what they can afford to buy and feed back.

Discussion - ask the class to consider what life would be like for their groups in the long term if conditions persisted. Ask what might make a difference

Video - 10 minutes
Show the lift the label video and introduce the postcard campaign.

Conclude the lesson with reference to other fair trade items and take any questions.
